Matteo Berrettini Angry With Unfair Treatment During Nadal vs Djokovic Battle During French Open 2021

Matteo Berrettini won the Queen’s Club Championship a week ago and will be playing at Wimbledon on Tuesday. The Italian, however, is upset with the unfair decision at his Roland Garros quarterfinal match. Berrettini was playing against Novak Djokovic at the French Open, when the spectators were made to leave midway. The reason was due to a night curfew in Paris.

During the quarterfinal match between Djokovic and Berrettini, the fans had to leave at 11 pm, Paris time. The city had a night curfew, and the match was delayed for 22 minutes, as fans were clearing the stadium. However, during the semifinal match between Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, fans stayed back in the stadium. The Italian was unhappy with this unfair treatment between the two matches.

Matteo Berrettini and his 2021 run

Matteo Berrettini recently won the Queen’s Club Championships after beating Cameron Norrie in the finals. This was Berrettini’s second title in 2021, as he won the Serbia Open in Belgrade. The World No9 won his second title on grass court and will be looking forward to add another at SW19.

The Italian wasn’t happy after his French Open quarterfinal defeat. He fought hard for a comeback against Djokovic, but the removal of fans disturbed the rhythm of the game. While fans were opposing the decision to leave the stadium, the two players had to pack their bags and leave. “I think it’s a shame, it’s something that I didn’t like. But it’s bigger than us, it’s not that you can do something about. I was feeling the momentum. I was playing good. Stopping wasn’t the best thing for my tennis, but I had to take it,” said Berrettini after his loss.

2021 has been a good year for Matteo Berrettini, performance wise. His two titles, a finals appearance and a quarterfinal finish at the Roland Garros, is enough to motivate the World No.9. He had to withdraw from the Australian Open earlier this year after suffering an ab injury. He gave a walkover in his fourth round to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Wimbledon Championships will be a good opportunity for the Italian to win his first slam title. He will be playing against Guido Pella on Tuesday for his first round match.
