The Cesc Fabregas comments that show how Antonio Conte could save Tanguy Ndombele’s Tottenham career

Ndombele’s Tottenham stint

Tottenham signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon in the summer of 2019.

Ndombele would not hit the ground running at Spurs, with the midfielder seemingly struggling to adapt to the aggressive nature of the Premier League and its physical demands.

But when Jose Mourinho left the club and was replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo, some Tottenham fans were no doubt hopeful we would finally see the best of Ndombele in a Spurs shirt.

However, the midfielder would continue to struggle under Nuno before he was sacked earlier this month.

Can Conte salvage Ndombele’s Tottenham career?

Ndombele now has a new boss in Antonio Conte. The Italian is one of the best active coaches in world football and, you would assume that if Conte cannot get anything out of Ndombele, then his Spurs career is probably done.

However, it does seem as though Ndombele will be handed a great chance to prove himself under Conte.

Firstly, as covered by 101 recently, it was reported that Conte wants to give an opportunity to Ndombele and change his mentality.

And now, comments on the part of Cesc Fabregas suggest that Conte could be the man to revive Ndombele’s floundering career.

Both Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo are not exactly known for their hands-on nature when it comes to coaching. However, Conte is and, as per Fabregas, when he played under Conte at Chelsea, the Italian would tell him exactly what to do for everything including where to pass the ball, before adding that freedom was non-existent:

“I think with Antonio, it was the first time that I’ve seen someone know exactly [what they want] … It was like going to school. I promise you, he will tell you, from the goalkeeper until you have scored a goal, what you have to do, exactly everything.

“Maybe it’s in a different way to how I saw football. At the beginning, it was difficult for me, don’t get me wrong. A lot of running, a lot of intensity. Big sessions, double sessions, gym sessions.

“I had coaches like Pep [Guardiola] who had a lot of positioning game but we had freedom inside of this. With Conte, the freedom was non-existent, he was telling me where I have to pass the ball.

“I’m 29 years old in that moment, I’ve already played for 13 years, I played in every final, I won a lot of things and this guy is telling me where I need to pass the ball.”

Though this may seem somewhat harsh on the surface, it could be exactly what Ndombele needs as the previous approaches of Jose Mourinho and Nuno clearly did not work too well at all.
