Vasyl Lomachenko Willing to Take a Pay Cut for Teofimo Lopez Rematch: ‘In Boxing, I Only Want the Legacy’

Vasyl Lomachenko is back in flow with a sensational stoppage win over Masayoshi Nakatani and seems eager to rematch Teofimo Lopez for his lost lightweight titles. The Ukrainian star had a close fight with Lopez in 2020 and lost.

However, Lomachenko has been disapproving of the result for months. As he has made a successful comeback on board, he is trying to get his hands back at Lopez. Surprisingly, the 33-year-old is even willing to take a pay cut to get the matchup. Michael Benson tweeted and revealed Lomachenko’s opinion on Teofimo Lopez’s team.

“You ask me about money? A question for me? I’ve always answered your question, I’ve always told – in boxing I only want the legacy, only legacy,” said Vasyl Lomachenko.

Meanwhile, the rematch is still far from being put on the papers. Unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez will defend his belts against George Kambosos Jr. next. However, the fight doesn’t have an official date and may go down by late 2021.

Besides, Kambosos Jr. is an undefeated boxer with more wins than Teofimo Lopez. Hence, he will present a legitimate threat to ‘Take Over’. All these features can hamper Loma vs Lopez 2 from happening. However, the rematch can be epic if it ever takes place.

Vasyl Lomachenko vs Teofimo Lopez–The lightweight slugfest

The first fight between two of the best lightweight pugilists scored a record-breaking benchmark at the Box Office. Both men also earned big paydays, which came after an intense in-ring collision. As we saw Lomachenko and Lopez trade haymakers, the fight went to the final bell.

Both the fighters gave their best and the decision could have gone either way. However, Lopez’s dominance in the early rounds and championship rounds earned him the four lightweight belts. Lopez, however, hasn’t fought since then and Lomachenko is back with a big win. If we can see ‘Take Over’ surpass his next test, the rematch would make sense for all the right reasons.
