What Are They Doing: Eddie Hearn Says Demetrius Andrade and Jermall Charlo Should Fight to Determine Canelo’s Next Opponent at Middleweight

Canelo Alvarez is one of the most highly-decorated, dominant professional boxers competing at this time. Acquiring such a legendary status in the world of boxing, it is no shocker that many up-and-coming prospects would want to call out the pound-for-pound best.

One of the most relevant call-outs that Alvarez received of late was from a Jermall ‘Hit Man’ Charlo. Beating Juan Macias Montiel in the fourth defense of his WBC middleweight strap, Charlo asserted his claim over the middleweight throne.

I want to get Canelo out here to Houston. If they are willing to come down to 160, this is my weight division. I’m going to stay here.

“I’m going to reign at 160. This is my fourth title, and I got many more to go…. I’m ready,” Charlo said in his post fight speech.

English promoter Eddie Hearn, who is also associated with Alvarez assessed Jermall Charlo’s callout in a recent interview with Constantino Garcia.

“I thought, no disrespect to Montiel, like he fought real tough, but Charlo struggled in that fight. I know he won wide, but it wasn’t an impressive performance,” he said.

In his epic title run, Canelo had dethroned Gennady Golovkin to win the 160-pound titles. He has moved up since and currently is looking to unify the Supper middleweight titles by defeating IBF champion Caleb Plant.

In view of this, Hearn made an assessment of what the possible situation could be for Charlo to secure a shot at Alvarez.

“Canelo Alvarez will fight absolutely anyone. He will never duck any fighter. But what he has is a plan to make history. So, right now, he’s a super middleweight, he wants to be undisputed, he wants all the belts. Charlo is a middleweight.

“Demetrius Andrade is a middleweight. Those two should be fighting. You got both of those guys calling him out. Canelo knows what he is doing. Demetrius Andrade and Charlo need to fight right now.

“Two American world middleweight champions. What are they doing? Then, the winner of that fight all of a sudden becomes a star and they can start talking about moving up,” Hearn says.

Can we see Jermall Charlo and Demetrius Andrade square off to determine the next opponent for Canelo Alvarez?

Hearn’s call for a fight between WBC champion Jermall Charlo and WBO champion Demetrius Andrade could be a fight that could allude to many fight fans. Andrade and Charlo both are undefeated and have shown interest in fighting.

Demetrius Andrade did call out Alvarez to a fight after the latter had defeated Billy Joe Saunders in May. Canelo’s response to the callout went viral.

His primary reason to turn him down was that he hadn’t faced any prominent middleweights till now. Jermall Charlo is exactly that.

“I am sure he will fight Charlo. But for what? It’s a voluntary defence of his world title. So is Demetrius. They are both tremendous fighters. But lets see them two fight in a unification. And then we can start looking at those big fights,” Hearn said.

As Hearn pointed out, the fight does make sense for both fighters. Pitting their unbeaten records against one another would definitely legitimize the throne of the middleweight division for the winner. Further, a shot at Canelo Alvarez could also be easily materialized.
