An explanation for the surprise half-time withdrawal of Marcos Alonso during Chelsea’s meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday has been provided.

Thomas Tuchel’s men of course marked their return to action earlier this afternoon.

Amid ongoing efforts to fend off 4th-placed Arsenal in the Premier League table, the Blues welcomed the aforementioned Wolves to Stamford Bridge, eyeing a swift return to winning ways.

When all was said and done, however, Chelsea were forced to make do with a share of the spoils, owing to an altogether spectacular late collapse.

Romelu Lukaku appeared to have done enough to guide the day’s hosts to all three points early in the 2nd-half, in swiftly adding to his opener from the penalty spot by means of a superbly-taken 2nd.

A twist in the tale, though, was yet to come…

After Trincao pulled one back for Wolves ten minutes from time, the comeback was completed with a full 96 minutes on the board, as Conor Coady rose highest to nod Chiquinho’s delivery beyond the helpless Edouard Mendy.

Chelsea’s collapse at Stamford Bridge on Saturday came after Thomas Tuchel had opted to shake things up in his backline at the interval in the clash, introducing the rarely seen Saul Niguez for first-choice left wing-back Marcos Alonso.

The decision came as something of a surprise amongst the Blues’ fanbase, with Alonso having of course come up with a number of important contributions in the attacking third over the course of the last couple of weeks.

Speaking to the media on the back of the full-time whistle, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of the Spaniard’s withdrawal was put to boss Tuchel.

The German, though, went on to confirm that it was not owing to any form of fitness concern, but instead simply a tactical switch.
